Viewing distances are a standard field rule of thumb (minimum ≈ pitch(mm) × 1m, optimal ≈ pitch(mm) × 3m), close to what you get from the human eye's ~1 arcminute resolution limit. Real comfortable distance shifts with content — text and detailed graphics want more distance than fast video, and it's a guide for planning, not a hard spec.
